Debra says, “When I leave The Perfect Workout, I can feel the endorphins being released. I thought you had to go running or jogging to get that!”
Debra was walking in the neighborhood when she heard, “You’re getting smaller!” That’s when she knew The Perfect Workout was paying off. Never a big gym person, the array of weight machines at most places was a bit intimidating. And as a care giver for her mother, she also doesn’t have time to spend an hour or more at the gym. So when she got a flier in the mail, Debra was intrigued. “I’m getting older, and I liked the idea of strength training. I felt I needed it. My arms and legs were getting flabby, and my weight was creeping up.” Her goals were to get firmer arms and legs and tone up all over. She actually didn’t think she’d lose weight, so when the pounds starting coming off slowly, it was a nice surprise. The slow motion strength training had another side bonus. “When I leave The Perfect Workout, I can feel the endorphins being released. I thought you had to go running or jogging to get that!” Debra also works hard to achieve “muscle success” at every session. It’s the idea of pushing on every exercise until you can’t possibly move the weights any further, after doing several repetitions for 10 seconds out and 10 seconds back. If you continue for a few more seconds, you achieve deep muscle fatigue, and that’s what brings results.
The other key to the program? One-on-one personal training. Debra is quick to praise her trainer, Andrew, and his supervisor, Ryan, at the Southwest San Jose studio. “Andrew has helped and encouraged me so much. He doesn’t baby me because I’m 63 years old, and he respects the level of work I try hard to put out each week. Ryan’s exuberance makes you smile, and it’s obvious they are both very knowledgeable, and take pride in their clients’ progress. I could not do this on my own. I wouldn’t get near the benefits.” Debra has taken the slow approach to taking weight off, and that suits her just fine. It’s taken a year and a half to lose 20 pounds and two sizes, but she knows it’s staying off that way. Her regular walking helps, and she’s continued to cut down on fats, sodium, and carbs, a contributing factor. More important, no more flab! When her friends were comparing their jiggling arms recently, Debra couldn’t join in. Hers are now toned.
An avid football fan, Debra enjoys cheering on her 49’ers and Raiders. She and her husband don’t have much spare time, but when they do you’ll often find them at the beach, either Monterey State Beach or Half Moon Bay. And as far as her training goes, she has no plans to stop. She’d like to lose another 10 pounds or so, and continue toning up. “It’s the firmness that feels so good!”
